Monster Metal Open Air 2011

This post is not supposed to be an official review ...

Yesterday I visited german town Gronau, the location of "Monster Metal Open Air". Actually, I cant understand, why it has a such a name, since it was an indoor concert... but nevermind. As far as I remember, there were 7 bands on the list, one of which had to cancel own appearance shorthly before. The gig started at 3 p.m., and, believe me or not, ended around 1 a.m. In addition to this I'd like to say, that the headliners of the evening, Agathodaimon, had to shorten their set-list (-3 songs) ! No one really cared of the time each band performed on the stage, no one cared about the change-over time in between the shows!

All pictures can be found here .

In my opinion, that's one of the things, the organizers have to look very strictly after. I rarely met an occasions, when the performance of a headliner (!) was shorthened cause of long performances of warm-up bands!  Must be the other way round! I dont want to imagine, what it would be, if there were 7 bands, as planned...Also, when the headliners went out on the stage, the crowd was pretty poor, - most people left as time came to midnight.
On the other hand, I have to admit, that those ones, who stayed, gave AGA quite nice support. Though some of people were pretty drunk, and, from time to time, created uncomfortable situation for me, as for photographer, who was picturing the band in an improvised photopit. Here I mean that they were  jumping on the borders with beer in hands, not caring if the first one falls and the last one - spills around on everyone. Some people were trying to jump forward together with the border (!)... Here we come to the 2nd minus of an event - no one was securing the space near with a stage. Closer to the end of AGA's performance in Photopit came out 2 guys, whom all the evening I saw around the sound pult on the dance floor and a notebook in backstage (probably some tech man) and that was it... Actually, during the whole day, I saw only 2 real security men - near with the entrance to the dance floor and near with the entrance to the VIP zone, which was in front of the stage on the 1st floor. Interesting, that there led 3 stairs (2 from the dance floor and 1 from the casual entrance-side), and only near with one of them someone was checking the passes...

Here I have to say, that in a VIP - zone everything was organized pretty well. Several tables and lots of chairs, free food (meat balls, breadrolls, schnitzel, potato salad) and bar with free not-alcohol (for alcohol one had to pay) drinks as cola and coffee. At least some fine place to sit and try to relax, though a very loud one.

Concerning the AGA's performance itself, each band member seemed to really enjoy with a show, working on the stage very actively and richly! More of such an artistic attitude, guys! Looks great;). And more gigs please. This year I had not enough of you yet, lol!
Set list included the good known compositions of  band's discography, starting from the earliest works and not forgetting the actual album. AGA played:
Ne Cheama Pamintul, Cellos For The Insatiable, Tongue Of Thorns, Departure, Serpent's Embrace, An Angel's Funeral, Past Shadows, Banner Of Blasphemy, Alone In The Dark (not sure if I remembered all the compositions and their real order).

Before the show. Guys decide, which songs have to be cut off

Guys, hope to see you again soon!

Message to organizers: thanks for the gig, though there were the good and the weak moments about it, I believe, you'll improve next time, letting all the sides (bands, fans, press, photographers and yourselves) enjoy the event fully. All my best wishes to you!
